The USS Russell recorded night-vision footage showing multiple triangular-shaped objects during the July 2019 UAP encounters involving U.S. Navy vessels off the coast of California.
In July 2019, sailors aboard the USS Russell recorded footage of pyramid-shaped (or triangular) objects hovering approximately 700 feet above the destroyer off the coast of San Diego. The Pentagon confirmed in April 2021 that the videos and photos, leaked to filmmaker Jeremy Corbell, were authentic and taken by Navy personnel, though they declined to label them as extraterrestrial.
While the objects were initially described as unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) behaving in non-aerodynamic and unexpected ways, subsequent Pentagon briefings stated that investigators were "reasonably confident" the triangular appearance was an optical effect caused by night vision goggles and an SLR camera capturing light from unmanned aerial systems (drones) in the area. The incident was part of a broader series of encounters involving multiple Navy ships, including the USS Omaha, which captured footage of a spherical object.
