Thousands of spectators, football players, officials, and residents witnessed unidentified aerial objects over Florence during a football match between Fiorentina and Pistoiese. The match was halted while witnesses watched the objects maneuver overhead. A strange white filamentous material, later nicknamed 'Angel Hair,' reportedly fell across portions of the city.
During the second half of a friendly football match at Stadio Comunale in Florence on October 27, 1954, spectators suddenly turned their attention skyward after several unusual objects appeared over the stadium. Players, referees, and officials also stopped play to observe multiple bright, slow-moving objects crossing the sky. Similar sightings were reported throughout Florence that day. Numerous witnesses also described a mysterious white fibrous substance drifting to the ground, commonly referred to as 'Angel Hair.' Samples collected by researchers reportedly consisted primarily of boron, silicon, calcium and magnesium before rapidly disintegrating. Although various explanations—including migrating spiders and atmospheric phenomena—have been proposed over the years, no consensus explanation accounts for all aspects of the event. The Florence incident remains one of history's largest publicly witnessed UFO events with well over 10,000 eyewitnesses.
