GEIPAN published a historical synthesis of the Valensole case on the fiftieth anniversary of the reported encounter. GEIPAN stated that the three surviving gendarmerie reports were the most reliable documents available concerning the case and made those documents publicly accessible. Because of the age of the event and the limitations on conducting a new investigation, GEIPAN classified the case D by default rather than assigning a conventional explanation.
