The 1958 Trindade Island incident involved the Brazilian Navy training ship Almirante Saldanha, which was conducting research for the International Geophysical Year (IGY) when approximately 48 crew members witnessed a silver, disc-shaped object hovering near the island on January 16, 1958.
Photographic Evidence Professional photographer Almiro Baraúna captured four clear images of the object, which was described as resembling a flattened Saturn with a greenish glow and leaving a phosphorescent trail. The negatives were developed on board and later analyzed by the Cruzeiro do Sul Aerophotogrammetric Service, which concluded there was no evidence of tampering or montage.
Official Investigation The incident triggered a formal inquiry by the Brazilian Navy and the National Congress after media reports caused public concern. Navy officials, including Admiral Alves Camera, confirmed the sighting but withheld further details due to national security concerns, stating the phenomenon could not be explained.
