In 1977, residents on the Brazilian island of Colares reported being attacked by mysterious, luminous aerial objects locally nicknamed chupa-chupa. Victims reported that the objects fired concentrated beams of light at them, resulting in physical injuries such as puncture wounds, burn marks, anemia-like symptoms, and temporary localized paralysis.
The civilian injuries and panic prompted the Brazilian Air Force to launch a secret military investigation known as Operação Prato (Operation Saucer).The primary details of these injury reports include:The Symptoms: Local doctors treated numerous civilians who reported being struck by narrow, intensely bright beams of light. Reported symptoms included extreme fatigue, dizziness, and small, circular puncture wounds that resembled those from a medical syringe.
Physical Findings: Medical professionals documented cases of severe localized burns and a specific type of localized hair loss on the scalp where patients were struck by the beams.
Military Documentation: The military task force, led by Captain Uyrangê Hollanda, documented hundreds of sightings and collected medical testimonies from the injured. They compiled over 500 photographs and dozens of hours of film, although many of these original medical records and multimedia files remain absent from declassified releases.
The Aftermath: The panic was so severe that a large portion of the island's population temporarily fled their homes, forcing the military to intervene to restore public safety.
