Exeter Police Investigation Report

Type: Law Enforcement Record

Source: Exeter Police Department

The official police report for the September 3, 1965 sighting in Exeter, New Hampshire, was filed by the Exeter Police Department following reports from 18-year-old Norman Muscarello and Officers Eugene Bertrand and David Hunt. The document detailed a large, silent object with five flashing red lights observed hovering low over fields, which moved erratically before disappearing.

While the original report was referenced in subsequent Project Blue Book investigations and media accounts, it is widely cited as having been lost or misplaced over time. However, the witness testimonies remained consistent, with Air Force investigators unable to find a probable cause for the sighting. The incident remains one of the most credible "Close Encounter of the First Kind" cases in UFO history, with the Exeter Police Department annually commemorating the event during the Exeter UFO Festival.
