The 1976 Tehran UFO incident was a heavily documented military encounter on September 19, 1976, involving visual and radar sightings of an unidentified flying object over the capital of Iran. Two Imperial Iranian Air Force (IIAF) F-4 Phantom jets experienced severe electromagnetic interference, including the loss of instrumentation and weapons control, when approaching the object. The incident is considered one of the most significant and thoroughly investigated military UFO cases in history, detailed in an official declassified U. S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) report. Key EventsThe Sighting: Following multiple calls from civilians in Tehran about a highly luminous, star-like object in the sky, IIAF command scrambled an F-4 Phantom from Shahrokhi Air Base to intercept. System Failures: As the first jet approached within 25 nautical miles of the object, its communication and weapons systems completely failed, forcing the pilot to abort and return to base. Second Intercept: A second F-4 was scrambled and successfully locked onto the object via radar. The pilot reported the object was comparable in size to a Boeing 703 tanker, flashing strobes of red, blue, green, and orange. Missile Attempt: When the crew armed a Sidewinder missile and prepared to fire, their radar and weapons controls shut down completely.
