The 1980 Cash-Landrum lawsuit (Case No. H-84-348) was filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas by Betty Cash, Vickie Landrum, and Colby Landrum against the U.S. government under the Federal Tort Claims Act. The plaintiffs sought $20 million in damages, alleging that the government was responsible for an experimental aerial device that caused their physical injuries, including symptoms consistent with acute radiation syndrome such as hair loss, skin blistering, and nausea.
The case was ultimately dismissed in 1986 because the plaintiffs could not prove that the U.S. government owned, operated, or controlled the diamond-shaped craft or the military helicopters witnessed during the December 29, 1980 encounter. Government agencies, including the Army, Air Force, and NASA, denied any involvement or knowledge of the object.
