One of the most discussed aspects of the Malmstrom AFB Missile Shutdown Incident is the testimony provided by former Air Force security personnel assigned to the missile launch facilities. Several retired servicemen have stated that security guards reported observing glowing unidentified aerial objects near missile silos immediately before or during the missile outages.
According to testimony from launch officers including Robert Salas and Walt Figel, reports from surface security personnel described a bright red-orange object hovering silently near one or more launch facilities. These reports were allegedly relayed by telephone to the underground Launch Control Centers shortly before multiple Minuteman I missiles entered a 'No-Go' condition.
While the official Strategic Air Command engineering investigations concentrated exclusively on identifying a technical cause for the missile failures, they did not examine or document reports of unidentified aerial phenomena. As a result, the security personnel testimony exists independently of the official engineering record.
Over subsequent decades, numerous former missile personnel have discussed these events in interviews, documentaries, conferences, and published works. Although recollections differ regarding specific details—particularly between the Echo Flight and Oscar Flight incidents—the accounts consistently describe unusual aerial objects being reported in the vicinity of strategic nuclear missile facilities during the period in which the missile shutdowns occurred.
Because much of this testimony was made years after the events and surviving official documentation regarding the security reports is limited, historians generally distinguish between the documented missile failures and the eyewitness accounts of unidentified aerial phenomena. Together, they form one of the most significant and debated military UAP cases on record.
