Following the events of August 13–14, 1956, the United States Air Force's Project Blue Book conducted an investigation into the radar and visual sightings reported at RAF Bentwaters and RAF Lakenheath in eastern England. The incident involved independent military radar stations, trained radar operators, visual observations from ground personnel, and an attempted interception by a Royal Air Force Venom night fighter.
The investigation reviewed radar logs, witness statements, operational records, weather information, and communications between the participating military installations. Investigators concluded that several conventional explanations, including equipment malfunction, atmospheric propagation, astronomical objects, and known aircraft, failed to satisfactorily explain all aspects of the incident.
Particular attention was given to reports that one unidentified target appeared to react intelligently during the attempted interception, maneuvering behind the Venom interceptor before rapidly departing the area. Radar operators at multiple locations independently tracked the object during portions of the encounter, while ground observers simultaneously reported unusual lights corresponding with the radar contacts.
Astronomer Dr. J. Allen Hynek, scientific consultant to Project Blue Book, later cited the Lakenheath–Bentwaters Incident as one of the strongest military UFO cases investigated by the Air Force. Hynek wrote that the reliability of the witnesses, the duration of the event, and the combination of radar and visual observations made the case particularly difficult to dismiss through conventional explanations.
Although Project Blue Book did not conclude that the objects represented extraterrestrial spacecraft or any specific technology, the investigation ultimately classified the incident as unidentified. More than half a century later, the Lakenheath–Bentwaters Incident continues to be referenced as one of the most compelling examples of a military radar-visual UAP encounter.
