The Trindade Island photographic negatives, taken by Almiro Baraúna on January 16, 1958, aboard the Brazilian Navy ship Almirante Saldanha, remain a subject of intense debate regarding their authenticity. Brazilian authorities, including the Navy Minister and the Cruzeiro do Sul Aerophotogrammetric Service, declared the negatives genuine, noting no photographic tricks were involved.
Conversely, U.S. officials (Project Blue Book) and skeptics argue the images were a hoax, citing Baraúna’s history of creating fake UFO photos and the fact that he retained the negatives for two days before handing them to the Navy, during which time he cut them from the rest of the film. While early technical analyses supported the photos' integrity, questions persist regarding the lack of immediate witness statements and the potential for image manipulation.
