The Marshall County Sheriff's Office prepared an official incident report following Deputy Val Johnson's unexplained encounter during the early morning hours of August 27, 1979. The report documents Johnson's account of observing an intense bright light while patrolling State Highway 220 near Stephen, Minnesota, before losing consciousness and later discovering damage to his patrol vehicle.
Responding officers found Johnson's patrol car stopped along the roadway with significant damage that included a shattered windshield, a broken left headlight, a damaged emergency light bar, and bent radio antennae. Broken glass was found inside the vehicle, yet investigators were unable to identify evidence of a collision with another vehicle or animal.
The report also notes that Johnson sustained minor injuries, primarily involving temporary eye irritation and light sensitivity. He was transported for medical evaluation following the incident. Investigators documented an unusual discrepancy involving Johnson's wristwatch and the patrol vehicle's dashboard clock, both of which had stopped for approximately fourteen minutes.
Officers carefully examined the scene for tire marks, debris, feathers, blood, or other physical evidence that might explain the damage. While numerous possible explanations were considered during the investigation, no single theory satisfactorily accounted for the combination of Johnson's testimony, the physical damage to the patrol vehicle, the stopped timepieces, and the lack of conventional impact evidence.
