The Belgian UFO wave involved two F-16 fighter jets scrambled on the night of 30–31 March 1990 to intercept an unidentified object detected by ground radar. Pilots, including Captain Yves Meelbergs, achieved brief radar locks on a target that performed physics-defying maneuvers, such as accelerating from 150 km/h to over 1,100 km/h and dropping altitude from 9,000 feet to 500 feet in seconds without sonic booms. Despite the jets' superior speed, the pilots never obtained visual confirmation of a craft, and the object repeatedly evaded pursuit by slipping out of radar range.

Chief of Operations Wilfried De Brouwer later confirmed that the radar data showed behaviors inconsistent with conventional aircraft, ruling out NATO stealth flights or civil aviation. While the Air Force concluded the events represented a "real phenomenon" they could not explain, subsequent analysis suggested some radar contacts may have been weather-induced anomalies or mutual detection between the F-16s. The incident remains one of the most credible UFO cases due to the combination of police testimony, military radar data, and official government acknowledgment of the unexplained nature of the sightings.
