The 1977 Colares UFO flap refers to a series of unexplained aerial phenomena and alleged light-beam attacks on civilians on the Brazilian island of Colares. Hundreds of local residents reported being targeted by mysterious, glowing objects—locally dubbed Chupa-Chupa—that emitted intense beams of light.

Civilians, supported by local medical professionals, provided detailed accounts and sought treatment for their injuries. The events are characterized by:Physical Attacks: Witnesses reported being struck by narrow, intense beams of light, predominantly at night. Many claimed the lights drained their energy, leaving them temporarily paralyzed, shivering, or voiceless.

Medical Symptoms: Local doctors, notably Dr. Wellaide Carvalho, treated dozens of civilians who presented with radiation-style burns, localized hair loss, and small, unexplained puncture wounds.

Civilian Reaction: The relentless sightings and perceived attacks caused mass panic. Residents abandoned their homes, held nighttime processions, lit bonfires, and launched fireworks in an attempt to scare the objects away.

The Military Investigation: The panic led the Mayor of Colares to request assistance, resulting in the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) launching Operação Prato (Operation Saucer) in late 1977. The military documented hundreds of sightings, but officially closed the investigation in 1978 without citing a definitive cause.
