Electronic Warfare Officer

Captain Howard C. Byrnes served as an Electronic Warfare Officer aboard a United States Air Force RB-47H Stratojet during the famous electronic intelligence encounter of July 17, 1957. His primary responsibility was operating the aircraft's sophisticated electronic countermeasures (ECM) equipment, which monitored and analyzed radar emissions encountered during flight.

During the mission, Byrnes detected an unusual radar signal unlike any known air defense or aircraft radar system. The unidentified emission repeatedly appeared on the RB-47's electronic intelligence equipment as the aircraft crossed Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma. According to mission reports, the signal displayed characteristics that distinguished it from known radar installations, including rapid movement relative to the aircraft and repeated acquisition after apparent departures.

Throughout the approximately ninety-minute encounter, Byrnes and fellow electronic warfare personnel continued to monitor the signal while other members of the crew visually observed a brilliant bluish-white light outside the aircraft. Simultaneously, several ground radar facilities reported tracking an unidentified target corresponding with the aircraft's position and observations.

Following the mission, Byrnes participated in the official Air Force debriefing and contributed to the documentation reviewed during Project Blue Book's investigation. His electronic intelligence observations became one of the strongest instrumental components of the case because they provided data independent of visual sightings alone.

The RB-47 encounter remains one of the most significant military UAP incidents in history due to the rare combination of airborne electronic intelligence, visual observation, and independent ground radar tracking. Byrnes' role as the aircraft's Electronic Warfare Officer places him among the principal witnesses associated with the event.
