Staff Sergeant John Healey

Flight Medic

John Healey is the fourth member of the helicopter crew in the 1973 Coyne Helicopter Incident. He was the flight medic aboard the U.

S. Army Reserve UH-1H helicopter.

He is a particularly interesting witness because, unlike Coyne and Jezzi who were in the cockpit, Healey was seated in the rear left section of the helicopter, giving him a different viewing angle of the event.

His involvement in the incident

On the night of October 18, 1973, the crew was returning from Columbus, Ohio, to Cleveland after scheduled military medical examinations. Around the Mansfield, Ohio area, Healey reported seeing a red light moving across the sky before the more dramatic portion of the encounter unfolded.

Later, as the object approached the helicopter, the crew reported seeing a large unusual object. Healey's position in the rear allowed him to observe the object from a different perspective than the pilots. The crew's account described:

a large gray metallic/cigar-shaped object,
a dome-like structure,
bright lights,
a green illumination entering the cockpit area
