Air National Guard pilot Lieutenant George F. Gorman engaged in a 27-minute aerial pursuit of a brightly illuminated object exhibiting extraordinary maneuverability over Fargo, North Dakota.
On the evening of October 1, 1948, Lieutenant George F. Gorman was conducting a routine night training flight over Fargo when he observed a brilliant white light moving at high speed. After receiving confirmation from the airport control tower that the object was also being observed from the ground, Gorman attempted to intercept it. The object repeatedly outmaneuvered his F-51 Mustang with rapid climbs, dives, tight turns, and apparent head-on passes. Gorman reported nearly colliding with the object before it accelerated steeply upward and disappeared. Project Sign investigated the encounter and initially considered it one of the strongest UFO cases before later attributing it to a weather balloon, an explanation many researchers dispute.
