Captain Thomas F. Mantell died while pursuing an unidentified aerial object observed by military personnel and civilians across Kentucky. The incident became one of the earliest and most controversial U.S. Air Force UFO cases.
On January 7, 1948, personnel at Godman Army Airfield observed a large circular object hovering high above Kentucky. Four F-51 Mustang fighters led by Captain Thomas F. Mantell were redirected to investigate. Mantell continued climbing after the other aircraft turned back due to low fuel and lack of oxygen equipment. Radio transmissions indicated he still had the object in sight before communication ceased. His aircraft later crashed near Franklin, Kentucky, killing him instantly. The Air Force initially proposed the planet Venus and later a classified Skyhook balloon as explanations, though neither explanation fully accounted for the sequence of observations or witness descriptions.
