The only known photograph of the crash site is a 1948 image taken by Tommy Hughes, showing Captain Thomas Mantell, Jr.’s crashed P-51 Mustang on Lake Springs Road in Franklin, Kentucky. This photo, provided by the Simpson County Historical Society, is the sole image on record of the wreckage following Mantell’s fatal pursuit of an unidentified flying object on January 7, 1948.
Additional documentation includes photos of the dispersed wreckage taken by Wendy Connors and images of the reassembled plane at Wright-Patterson Airbase, as well as a historical marker dedicated to Mantell in Franklin in 2001. The incident remains one of the most famous early UFO cases, with the object Mantell pursued often identified as a high-altitude weather balloon or a lens flare, though the crash was officially attributed to hypoxia and loss of control at high altitude.
