In 2016, Chuck Rak publicly recanted the abduction portion of the Allagash Abductions narrative, which he and Charlie Foltz, Jack Weiner, and Jim Weiner had maintained for 40 years. While Rak confirmed that the group witnessed a UFO over Eagle Lake in Maine on August 26, 1976, he alleged that the detailed memories of being examined by aliens—which were recovered via hypnosis in 1988—were fabricated.
Rak claimed the men used hashish during the trip and that the abduction story was a moneymaking scheme that ultimately failed to generate significant income. The other three witnesses, who passed polygraph tests and presented consistent artistic renderings of the entities, continue to assert the abduction was real and accuse Rak of dishonesty due to interpersonal conflicts. Consequently, the case status has been downgraded to Insufficient Data due to this internal contradiction
